Pierce my Ear
When I sang in the choir at Dulin's Grove A.C. Church, I was introduced to a song that bring me to tears even today when I hear it, "Pierce My Ear." To truly understand the meaning of the song you have to be familiar with a few verses in Exodus 21:2-6 (where I was reading this morning) - “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. “But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’ then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life. As I pondered those Scriptures, the lyrics of the song came back to me and, again, brought tears to my eyes. "Pierce my ear Oh Lord, my God. Take me to your door this day. I will serve no other God, Lord I'm here to stay. For you have paid the price for me; With Your blood you ransomed me. Now I will serve you eternally. Lord I'm here to stay." I love it when God does that....He guides my thoughts and creates memorable images that bring home the truth of passage of Scripture. Still smiling as I drove to work, a song by Tenth Ave. North was playing on the radio. "Why are you looking for love? Why are you still searching? As if I'm not enough?" At times, I am guilty of denying (with my behavior) that God is enough. Why do I act as if God's love is not enough...acting as if I need more? The prayer of my heart is that the reality of God's love being enough will be evident to all around me! Lord, pierce my ear!
